Aircon and Corona: should we be concerned?

The worldwide coronavirus outbreak (officially SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19) is a cause for great concern. There are stories circulating that the virus can spread through the air conditioning in an entire building. However, there is no reason to panic: if your air-conditioning installation is properly maintained on time, the chance of the virus spreading is very small.

Corona: Follow the rules of the government

In order to minimize the chances of further spread of the coronavirus, it is crucial that you strictly follow the rules imposed by the government. Rules of thumb are: stay as much as possible at home, good personal hygiene (wash hands!) And keep a minimum of one and a half meters away when you are outside.

No need to switch off the air conditioning!

Many people and companies wonder whether it is necessary to switch off their air conditioning installation during this corona crisis. This is not necessary, even if corona contamination has been detected in someone's home or building. The virus is mainly transmitted by directly inhaling saliva droplets from a sick person or by touching surfaces that this person has infected.
It is even not recommended to switch off the ventilation system of a building. Good ventilation is crucial and may even limit the risk of contamination.

Guidelines for proper maintenance and Use

Following the corona crisis, the FEHVA (Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning Associations) has published guidelines for the correct maintenance, adjustment and use of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) installations.

The professional federation emphasizes these rules:

  • Make sure the filters in the system are properly installed, clean and disinfected.

  • A maximum supply of fresh air is essential.

  • Ideal are systems that completely extract the extraction air. In this type of installation there is no contact between the blown air and the extraction air. The dirty air is completely removed.

  • Is there no active ventilation? Then air the rooms via ventilation grilles or by regularly opening the windows

  • Changing a humidification system differently makes little sense, since the humidity has little effect on the corona virus. Humidification is in any case less important at this time of year, because the relative moisture percentage automatically rises above thirty percent. Humidifiers may therefore remain switched off

  • In office buildings it is recommended to limit the number of people. Only those who are unable to telework can be present. Large concentrations of people in meeting rooms or refters are in any case out of the question.

Additional guidelines for catering, shops, companies and offices:

  • Have the air-conditioning system serviced and reviewed before reopening the case, and have the external air filters cleaned or replaced as necessary to maximize ventilation flow.
  • Do not set the air conditioner lower than 26 to 27 degrees. In cases where they require a different temperature range due to the nature of the product, this is reduced (for example, butchers, florists, etc.).
  • Ceiling and floor fans should not be used.
  • Provide permanent ventilation of the toilets 24 hours / 7 days. Check the correct functioning of the exhaust air in the toilets. Do not open windows of the toilets to ensure proper ventilation direction.
  • Indicate that the toilets should be flushed with the lid closed
  • Do not switch off the forced ventilation of the outside air (if available) at night and on weekends. Run systems at a low flow rate (if possible).
  • Maintenance and inspection must be carried out outside opening hours!

Infrared thermometer, non-contact IR measurement

The infrared laser thermometer offers the advantages of a simple and hygienic operation and a fast and accurate measurement. It can accurately measure the temperature within 1 sec by pointing the detector at a person or an object.

Access control, facial recognition and body temperature measurement

In this section of Body Temp Access Control you will find a wide range of devices for access control with fever recognition and facial recognition.
These terminals are able to detect a fever and thus deny access. In addition, they can be configured to require the use of facial recognition, so that only the terminal will open the door upon recognition.
